Apparently, cows burp too much – at both ends – releasing methane that’s bad for the environment. While farmers explore solutions like Bovaer to make cows less gassy, some dairy purists insist on sticking with ‘Full Fart’ milk.

At Zixty, we’ve chosen a different route to mitigate against harmful emissions. Instead of tweaking cows (which, let’s face it, doesn’t quite fit our business model for temporary car insurance), we plant trees – lots of them.

Our commitment to greener car insurance is one of the reasons we’re accredited by Green Mark and proud recipients of the Ethical Best Buy award from the Good Shopping Guide. Because saving the planet doesn’t have to be complicated – or involve cows.

A Tree-mendous milestone

Our mission is not just about providing temporary car insurance, it is also about reducing the impact that driving has on the environment by providing drivers with an ethical car insurance option.

Today, we are thrilled to announce that, in partnership with Eden Reforestation, we have planted 25,000 trees as part of our commitment to carbon offsetting. It’s a milestone we’re incredibly proud of, but why plant trees in the first place?

Why trees?

Trees are nature’s multitaskers. They absorb carbon dioxide emitted by vehicles, release oxygen, stabilize soil, and provide shade and shelter for wildlife. By planting trees, we actively combat climate change.

Planting 25,000 of these little miracle makers means something:

  • Carbon Offset Equivalent: Removing the carbon emissions of approximately 4,076 cars over 30 years, or 136 cars annually.1
  • Oxygen Generation: Producing enough oxygen annually for 50,000 people – roughly the population of Wokingham or Yeovil.
  • Creating Habitats: A forest covering 50 acres, teeming with biodiversity and offering homes to countless species.
  • Connecting Communities: If planted in a line, the trees could stretch over 47 miles – enough to link Bristol to Gloucester.

Sustainability Made Simple

Not everyone drives an electric car (just 3% of UK drivers right now), but that doesn’t mean we can’t all make a difference through the choices we make. Zixty supports environmental sustainability in two key ways:

1. Promoting Car Sharing

Our temporary car insurance policies – from 1 hour to 28 days – make borrowing cars easy. Studies show that for every shared vehicle, between 5 and 15 cars are removed from the road. Less traffic, fewer emissions, more sustainability.

2. Carbon Offsetting

We plant trees to offset the emissions from vehicles insured through Zixty. That includes not just the driving but also the emissions from manufacturing cars – even electric ones.

While carbon reduction is the ultimate goal for everyone, offsetting helps slow the impact of climate change today. That’s why we commit to offsetting the carbon emissions of every policy sold – be it for cars or vans.

A Shared Mission

This achievement isn’t just Zixty’s; it’s yours too. Every Zixty policy contributes to this growing forest, and together, we’re taking small, steady steps toward a big impact.

The road to a sustainable future doesn’t end here. As we continue to grow, so will our forests, and so will the army of people who car share. By choosing Zixty, you’re part of a movement that values the planet as much as peace of mind on the road.

And yes, 25,000 trees might be a modest start, but as they say: from little acorns grow mighty oaks.

Concerned about your carbon footprint?

If you’re concerned about how driving impacts your carbon footprint, we understand you completely. Therefore, where possible, we recommend traveling by public transport. Alternatively, if you really want to experience a place, consider using a bike or walking. However, when that’s not practical, borrowing a vehicle rather than owning one can at least reduce your carbon footprint to some extent. Furthermore, here’s a little extra bonus for you: we plant a tree for every policy you take out with Zixty. Additionally, if you sign up for our Zixty Miles program in the app, we plant enough trees to offset up to 100 miles of your journey each day you’re insured with us.
